Orphanage and Eco Farm

Sharada Village, Kavre, Nepal

For several years,Himalayan Holidays, and subsequently its non-profit arm formed in 2008, MissionHimalaya, have been supporting NYCDS orphanage (New Youth Orphanage) inKathmandu, canvassing for funds, coordinating donors and supplying basiccommodities and services to the orphanage on a weekly basis. Other donorsconsist of Gulf For Good (UAE), The Dooley Foundation (USA), The EnglishCollege, Dubai and a number of smaller groups and individuals includingourselves, Trekking for Nepal.

Mission Himalaya is currently raising fundsto construct a custom building for the orphanage, and land has already beenprocured on the outskirts of the capital, courtesy of funds raised by TheEnglish College, Dubai.

Why build from scratch?

The children arecurrently housed in a rented building, so much of the funds raised are spent onrent. The orphanage suffers from water shortages in the summer, overcrowdingand a lack of recreation facilities. The building is a large family home andlacks adequate plumbing and severage for so many inhabitants. Other factorscontributing to the decision to custom-build, are poor quality food, expensivefruit and vegetables, and Kathmandu’s continuing, daily power cuts and load-shedding.

The new orphanage will be designed to fit,and will go some way to solving the above challenges. In summary:

Challenges... and the solutions

Overcrowded conditions     adequate dormitories

Poor water quality             well with safe drinking water

Inadequate plumbing       new bathroom block

Frequent power cuts         extensive use of solar technology

No medical facilities         small clinic on-site

Lack of study space         custom-built study rooms

No recreational facilities    playground and indoor hall

Little on-site supervision   salaried staff on-site
